XAVER February 1998

The short biographical notes which are our only source of information show that 38-year-old Richard Smerin has already had an eventful Blues career. He comes from London; where his public debut at the age of 14 brought him considerable acclaim. Over the next few years he was increasingly described as "the best young guitarist in the country." In 1979 he moved to Copenhagen, where he worked his way up with a series of solo performances and eventually opened for Joan Armatrading, Alexis Korner, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and other great Blues artists. After releasing his first album, he accepted Alexis Korner's invitation to return to London, where he again appeared on the same bill with big names like B.B. King and John Lee Hooker. This was followed by other albums and countless tours, including the U.S.A. On his latest CD, to be released later this month, he devotes all his talent to the memory of his friend Les French, who died last October. Don't miss the chance to hear him perform live at Woodstock.
