London guitarist Richard Smerin at the Kangaroo Inn on Thursday | |
English guitarist Richard Smerin will be performing at the Kangaroo Inn in Neumarkt on Maundy Thursday, 9th April, at 8 p.m. Smerin was born in London in 1960. After his first public performance in 1974 he was described as a child prodigy. A few years later, he was referred to as the best young guitarist in England. Richard Smerin moved to Copenhagen in 1979 and soon made his mark on the Danish music scene, performing solo across the country and opening for well-known artists like Joan Armatrading, Alexis Korner and Bert Jansch. He cut his first album of classic Blues numbers in 1981, accompanied by Kim Gutman on guitar and Jorgen Lang on harp. After accepting an invitation from Alexis Korner to attend a concert in London featuring B.B. King, Bobby 'Blue' Bland and John Lee Hooker, he opened for B.B. King at the Carlton Theatre in Birmingham. |

In 1994, Smerin brought out an album of original songs entitled "In Retrospect". It won critical praise, and led to the release of a CD recorded in Berlin in 1996, under the title "Q. - M.U.D." In October and November Smerin toured the United States, playing thirty gigs in six weeks, including a performance at the legendary "House of Blues". He also found time to record. With the help of his friends Paul Rishell and Annie Raines and the fabulous Ken Selcer on second guitar, Richard Smerin produced a new CD, "One-Off Chance - Songs of Les French", his best work yet. Entrance is free, but seats must be booked by telephone on (09 181) 3 32 77.
