London guitarist and singer Richard Smerin's concert at the "Grüner Schwan" was a relaxed and enjoyable lesson in the blues. Smerin sat on stage with only his guitar and no accompanying group, just like the early Blues singers. Playing a number of world-famous pop songs, such as "House of the Rising Sun", "Love in Vain" and "Top of the World", that were written by black street performers whose names hardly anyone remembers, Smerin sang them in their original versions with a sensitive guitar accompaniment. His voice has the authentic Blues sound, flipping easily from a deep bass to a high treble. Richard Smerin has much to tell about the origins of the Blues. Engrossed in his teaching role, he broke the "lesson" off (though not before the show was due to end), when he thought the audience were getting too noisy.
